BISMARCK, ND – The North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) honored four real estate agents with Champion of Affordable Housing Awards at the REALTOR® convention of the Dakotas in Dickinson, ND. The awards recognize and celebrate outstanding contributions to North Dakota’s affordable housing industry.
“Local real estate agents are one of the best sources of information for homebuyers on North Dakota Housing’s affordable loan programs,” said Mike Anderson, NDHFA executive director. “We are pleased to have such outstanding agents representing North Dakota families and offering them valuable support as they step into homeownership.”
The agents recognized by NDHFA are Patricia Karley of Coldwell Banker First Realty in Fargo; Sandra Retterath of Retterath Real Estate in Hazen; Richard Theurer, Jr of The Real Estate Company in Dickinson; and Shirley Thomas of Bianco Realty in Bismarck.
“Champion Award recipients are judged on their promotion of North Dakota Housing’s homeownership programs, and their involvement in locally sponsored affordable housing projects and events,” said Dave Flohr, NDHFA homeownership division director.
Karley has been a real estate agent since 1995. She is currently president of the homeowners association in her housing development and she writes for online classes at the University of North Dakota. In her spare time, she loves to golf, wakeboard, and kayak, take photos and garden.
“First-time homebuyers are so excited and thankful. Buying a home is such a big step and you never forget your first place,” said Karley. “I love helping them.”
Retterath has been a real estate agent for 20 years. She serves on the local housing authority board and teaches homebuyer education. Her latest passion has been serving as board vice president for CommunityWorks North Dakota. In her free time, Retterath loves spending time with her three children and four grandchildren, her friends and also enjoys camping, boating and traveling.
“It is such an accomplishment when homeowners get their first home,” said Retterath. “Working with buyers is so rewarding for me.”
Theurer, a North Dakota native, has been a real estate agent since 1992. In his first year, he earned the Rookie of the Year award. He has been married for 30 years and has three children. Theurer believes his love of real estate is born out of spending time building houses with his father when he was young.
“My favorite clients are first-time homebuyers,” said Theurer. “It’s all new and exciting to them. It’s so gratifying to help answer their questions and ensure that everything goes smoothly.”
Thomas started her career in real estate in 2001. She has two daughters, a son-in-law and two active grandsons. Thomas has been a consistent top producer in the Bismarck/Mandan area. This is the fifth year she has been recognized by North Dakota Housing with the Champion of Affordable Housing Award.
“It’s very rewarding to assist first-time buyers with one of the largest financial commitments of their lives,” said Thomas. “First-time buyers today come with checklists and it’s so fun to see what they are looking for in their first home.”
